The Condition of the Human Heart

Listen to the Lord’s words in Mark 7 concerning the desperate condition of the human heart. There is nothing in man capable of making a just evaluation of anything on earth. Jeremiah 17:9 is God’s verdict on the human heart; “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?”

An employer might involve his personality in his evaluation. Some of his evaluations may be true, but because he may not like a person, he becomes subjective in his judgment. On the other hand, because of sentimentality or personality rapport, our evaluations are distorted, and we may form opinions according to our human resources. No one knows his own heart.

Isaiah 1:5b says, “The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.” This is why it is a totally ineffective endeavor when a group of people meet to evaluate anything of truth as it is defined by the Word of God. Pride, ego, arrogance, and knowledge that “puffs up” interfere with discernment. Genuine discernment can only come from God. Jeremiah 10:23 says,”O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself; it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.” This point must be made clear: no man can have confidence in his flesh (2). We trust not in ourselves, but in God who raised Jesus from the dead.
