The Sustenance of Life

Andrew Murray in his book entitled Holy in Christ states “The link between Redemption and Holiness is Obedience. Obedience is the path to union with God’s Holy Will.” Man’s obedience is the listening to and doing the will of God in his life. “And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8). Christ’s example of obedience is man’s example of performing the perfect will of God. Paul admonished us to bring “into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (II Corinthians 10:5). Christ learned “obedience by the things which He suffered… and became the author of eternal salvation unto all them the obey Him” (Hebrews 5:8-9).

Christ’s obedience was the sustenance of His life. In doing God’s will, He drew upon the Father for strength, and so must we. His life was characterized by “…not what I will, but what thou wilt” (Mark 14:36b) and out of obedience He could say “…the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink?” (John 18:11b).

It was through disobedience that man fell from God and His blessings; and it is only through obedience to God’s will that man can again enjoy his status. Obedience leads to righteousness (2) and a purification of the soul (3).
