Never Destroyed

Rescued

Peter’s first message to the church was: Save yourself from this untoward generation, Acts 2:40-47. The word ‘untoward’ means a polluted, putrid, sacrilegious, and a defiled generation, time period, or an age. How do we save ourselves? Of course, we are saved by grace, Ephesians 2:8-9, but here ‘saving ourselves’ refers to being delivered and rescued from this evil generation, 1 Timothy 4:16, James 1;21.

Build of the Right Foundation

Foundations are vital for a Christian and for church life. In Africa, I’ve seen houses that have only a foundation, but nothing built on them. Foundations are the way we are to save ourselves from this generation, Psalm 11:3 says: If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? This means that there is very little born again Christians can accomplish in their Christianity without the right foundation. 1 Corinthians 3:9-10 says that there is no other foundation but Jesus Christ, and that we are to build on that foundation. Psalm 82:6 says that all the foundations of the world are out of course and have no spiritual value.

Keys to Spiritual Life

The foundations in the Book of Acts and throughout the Bible are a key to spiritual life. The Bible is the first foundation; in Acts 2:40-47 they gladly received the Word. Peter preached the Word using many Old Testament Scriptures in his message. Matthew 4:4 tells us how to live; by every Word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

The second foundation is prayer. They were always praying. So much so that they shook the house. Prayer was the key in Acts 3, 4:31-37, and 6:1-7.

A third foundation is the church or Body life. Fellowship with other believers and the gates of hell cannot prevail against the church, Matthew 16:13-18. The church is the Body of Christ attached to the Head Jesus Christ. It is the fullness of God, Ephesians 1:22, and the glory of God, Ephesians 3:20-21.

The fourth foundation is the gospel and evangelism. They were constantly and consistently evangelizing from Jerusalem to Judea, to Samaria, to Damascus, and to the nations (Acts 10-11), to the Europeans (Acts 16), to the Asians (Acts 19), and to Rome (Acts 26-27). There is the commission to go to all the world. (Romans 1:5-8, Mt 28:18-20, Mark 16:9-19).

These are the four foundations that can never be destroyed. Jesus is the Word, Jesus is the one we pray to, Jesus is the Head of the Body and Jesus is the message of the Gospel.

Let’s go forward building on these foundations. – Pastor Steven Scibelli
