There is no foundation and nothing that can be relied on in man in his natural state. Reaction, arrogance, double-mindedness, self-pity, and inconsistency all reveal the instability and inadequacy of the flesh. The Bible says that “man at his best state is altogether vanity” (Psalm 39:5). His life is a vapor (2). Lowly people and men of high rank alike all are rated as “lightweights” in God’s Word (3).
A good thing to consider in evaluating our lives is this: What will remain 10 years from now? In what we say, in what we do, in how we spend our days — what will be remembered? Our problems probably will not be remembered. Details disappear, but character speaks on through the years.
God’s Word is forever “settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89). His Words have impact. They are solid, dependable and stable. When we are filled with God’s Word, we are unshaken by the winds of turmoil, trends and trouble, Sometimes, however, God allows our lives to be shaken to reveal the foundations.
In II Corinthians 4:16-18, light afflictions may cause the outer man to decay, but the foundations are renewed and strengthened daily as we prioritize God’s eternal Word. This works an “eternal weight of glory” far beyond all comparison (5). Be a “heavyweight fighter” for God!
