One of Satan’s strategies is to keep believers looking for their portion in this life instead of from God (2). One of these portions is in materialistic things such as wealth. The Christian who trusts in his wealth, depending upon it for his happiness, is in reality bankrupt. He has been robbed of the very thing that can bring satisfaction and contentment. Riches can never satisfy the needs of man (3).
“Godliness with contentment is great gain” (I Timothy 6:6). It is a very special thing when a believer learns to be content, instead of covetous. Godliness is sound, doctrinal thinking that is in accordance with the Word of God. The believer who receives the Word, mixes faith with what he hears, and allows truth to become resident in his soul becomes “built up” and rooted in the Word of faith (4).
According to God’s evaluation, the man whose soul possesses the wisdom and application of truth is much richer in the economy of God’s Kingdom than the man who possess material wealth and considers himself rich because of temporal blessing. Proverbs 13:7 (Amplified) contrasts the two. “One man considers himself rich, yet has nothing (to keep permanently); another man considers himself poor, yet has great (and indestructible) riches.” When you look at this world and how few materialistic things you have, remember “Riches profit not in the day of wrath” (Proverbs 11:4a).
