Repentance is the first fruit of knowing God. We must be careful that we are constantly seeking to know God because our old lust patterns are ready to creep back in if we allow them. Anything outside of God’s will is lust. “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Matthew 7:14). We must be careful that we stay on that narrow path and not be drawn away by lusts.
One way lust patterns can slip into Christians’ lives is when they pride themselves in their personalities. It is important to know that we are not to live in our human personality. If we do, we are living in what is commonly called “the flesh.” We should reveal Jesus Christ. The only true way to discover ourselves is through the Cross, and by allowing Christ to control us (2).
The basis for our personality should be, “I no longer live but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20a, NIV) and “Christ, who is your life” (Colossians 3:4a). By taking up our Cross, we will allow Him to live in us.
