The cross neutralizes the power of self, and sets us free to walk in newness of life. Newness of life is transformation of life through the Word of God and the Holy Spirit, which has its source from the Father, not from the self. “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I” (Galatians 2:20a).
As we make God our sufficiency, the soul becomes a habitation for God through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter who, in II Corinthians 1:4, “comforts us in all our tribulation.” The Holy Spirit is our teacher, abiding in us continually and bringing to our remembrance the principles of truth and categorical doctrine that have been stored in our memory. He is faithful to bring to mind any area where we have failed the grace of God because He also brings conviction. It is through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit that a new capacity for life is given to the selfless believer. Working miraculously in the heart to conform the believer to the image of Christ is the supreme role of the Holy Spirit. “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” (II Corinthians 3:18).
