“Passivity,” according to Webster’s Dictionary, is the state or quality of being the object of action or of being acted upon from without. Passivity can be more easily defined in terms of the mind as the state of being non-active but acted upon.
Passivity is any thought outside the objective Word of God. Passivity starts by giving a place to a spirit that leaves your mind in a state of sluggish, slothful dullness. Christians not rooted in the Word of God (Ephesians 3:17; Colossians 2:7) use passivity as an escape rather than facing the Cross and becoming true disciples. They would rather live in the convenience of passive thoughts that appease their emotions than live in God’s thoughts that produce equality in their emotions through a crucified will.
Satan uses passivity as a counterfeit for the comfort of 2 Corinthians 1:4. Satan’s goal is to occupy Christians’ minds with thoughts about the good times they had with Adam. Then he amplifies the memories to lead them onto amplifying the good of Adam over the One New Man.
Passive thoughts demoralize the Christian and demolish the very image that God’s thoughts reproduced in them ( Jeremiah 29:11). They break down the possibility of learning obedience and patience through longsuffering. Passivity says longsuffering does not fulfill our joy. Passivity leaves us in a state of being slothful and forgetful and of forsaking the promises.
