The depravity of the human heart must be reckoned with: “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)
Modern man is very reluctant to acknowledge his unrighteousness. He turns from God’s provisions to self-defense mechanisms and support systems to prove he is “not really so bad.” In doing so, he departs from the very truth that will set him free to live in the victory and power of faith in a living Christ. An honest reckoning with depravity enables a believer to be in right standing with God. The recovery principle in I John 1:9 makes it possible for the believer to grow continually in the application and power of truth, even though he is, by nature, an undeserving sinner. The provisions granted to the believer, by virtue of his standing in Jesus Christ, are the indwelling Holy Spirit (3), adoption into the church, the royal family of God (4), and the many promises from the Bible that become the guiding premise for the child of God (5). The Word of God is the source of objectivity which is able to deal with the subjectivity of the human mind (6).
We cannot comprehend the awesomeness of the Word of God to not only expose sin and reveal motives, but to bring refreshment and specific guidance in life. Matthew 4:4 says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
