Consider a nation whose production is idle. The people only do what they can just to “get by.” They never do more than they have to do. This type of spirit really affects believers today. There is no diligence in the attitude.
“He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand” (Proverbs 10:4a). There are untold multitudes who have what is called “the spirit of laziness”. Slothfulness pervades in almost every aspect to today’s society. This produces a spiritual poverty that is overwhelming. Proverbs 24:30-34 tells the story of the field of the “slothful,” how it was all covered over with thorns and nettles. The stone wall was also broken down. The owner of this field did not take advantage of his opportunities. “He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster” (Proverbs 18:9). They often do pleasurable things before they take care of the responsibilities of the day. For example, if an individual had a choice between studying for an exam or doing something he would enjoy more, he should get in the habit of studying before the pleasurable event. “But the hand of the diligent maketh rich” (Proverbs 10:4b). God honors diligence.
May the Lord reveal to His children how to buy up His opportunities to redeem the time. The Lord will bring spiritual riches to those who practice this principle of diligence.
