It is essential for the child of God to understand and actively enter into the will of God for his life. Many believers do not know God’s will, either because of ignorance or other factors that hinder them from following Christ wholeheartedly. These factors may include an unwillingness to take up the cross daily, lukewarmness, sentimentality, natural preference, or following personal interests.
The person who is willing to follow Christ in the perfect will of God is told what to do in the Word of God. “order my steps in thy Word; and let not any iniquity have dominion over me” (Psalm 119:133). As the Word instructs the believer and tells him what to do, the Holy Spirit eventually tells him where to go geographically, in order to apply the details of the instructions. “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple” (Psalm 119:130).
When we are controlled by the understanding of God’s Word, we are able to “walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16b). When we follow the instructions of the Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are then able to discover and walk in God’s perfect will. This is only possible by depending upon God’s provision of grace, and is not a result of any of our human striving or self-effort. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way” (Psalm 37:23).
