The simplest and yet most profound principle in the Bible is the doctrine of free volition. It is said that no king who rules over a country is as important as the person who rules over his own spirit. “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city” (Proverbs 16:32). A believer who has a will and strong volition (through the grace of God, the Word of God and the Spirit of Christ) can actually take charge over his own mind, emotions, and life situations.
This principle of ruling is very interesting when placed with Proverbs 25:28, “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” The believer “without walls” is the one who does not have specific categories of biblical doctrine established as his frame of reference. The Scriptures, like walls, are a defense against the enemy. So many believers are defeated because they do not have doctrine built into their souls. “Through wisdom is a house builded; and by understanding it is established: and by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches” (Proverbs 24:3-4). The Christian must construct the walls of his soul with doctrine by hearing the Word with positive volition and concentration. This will prove beneficial when the enemy begins to come against his life. Rule over your soul with the Word of God.
