Guarding the Heart

When a believer is living the flesh, the only things that he will be concerned about are the issues pertaining to the flesh. Matthew 6:21 says, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” This is why it is so important to hide the Word of God in our hearts (Psalm 119:11).

Then, in Proverbs 4:23a we read, “Keep thy heart with all diligence.” The Hebrew word for “keep” speaks of guarding or posting a watch over a place of confinement. Therefore, once we hide the Word of God in hearts, we are to be watchful always and guard against anything that might enter our souls that is outside of Christ. When we do this in obedience to the Word, then there is a standard raised up against Satan. He is the one who wants us to be always occupied with the needs and desires of our flesh.

By making God the issue through the power of the Word, we are no longer controlled by our natural dispositions. Our treasure is found in the pages of His Book, the Bible. Our hearts become clothed with humility. The only thing Satan and those in the world will see is Christ being poured out. Our hearts will be so consumed with who Christ is that He will be all that is there to spring forth from us.
