Laying Aside the Weights

The narrow road is rough on the old sin nature. If the old sin nature has any part in controlling the mind, sermons are rough on it. There is only one thing God wants to do with the old sin nature, and that is to crucify it. “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:11).

If you are not running the race, you will not notice the weights. Did you ever start exercising and all of a sudden realize what poor physical shape you’re in? It is a true principle that the moment we start running the race, we see the things that begin to hinder us like a swelling of superfluous flesh. The Lord gives us definition in dealing with the weights.

Always remember, a weight is anything that takes time and strength away from God’s appointed duties. The weight is anything that binds the mind to earth and makes us in bondage to ourselves. Real, legitimate duties are not to be construed as weights. These would be responsibilities such as our families, friends, and jobs.

“Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8a).
