Blue Days

“Feeling the stress of a fallen world is part of existence. We might call this the’blues.’ Romans 8:23 teaches, ‘we groan.'”

“The blues are common to the lot of a fallen human race.”

“… Expectation of a carefree life or constant euphoria and excitement are neither scriptural nor true to experience.” Steven Waterhouse

“The fact that you have become a Christian does not mean that you cease to have to live with yourself —

You will have to live with yourself as long as you are alive. ” Martin Lloyd Jones

Depression is related to 1. Little interest or pleasure in doing things, 2. Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless, 3. Trouble falling or staying asleep, or sleeping too much, 4. Feeling tired or having little energy, 5. Poor appetite or overeating, 6. …you are a failure or have let yourself or your family down, 7. Trouble concentrating on things, 8. Moving or speaking so slowly, 9. Thoughts that you would be better off dead, 10. etc.

As people get older the tendency towards depression may grow stronger. Why? Let’s read the Bible:

“Pointless! Pointless! – says Kohelet -Utterly meaningless!

Nothing matters! What does a person gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?  Generations come, generations go … The sun rises, the sun sets … The wind blows south, then it turns north … All the rivers flow to the sea, yet the sea is not full; to the place where the rivers flow, there they keep on flowing.  Everything is wearisome … the eye is not satisfied with seeing, the ear not filled up with hearing. What has been is what will be, what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. ” Ecclesiastes 1:2-9 Complete Jewish Bible
We must come to grips with these realities lest we fall into the trap of despair. We must reckon upon the emptiness of this existence, the cyclical nature of the world’s activities, the lack of fulfillment with things earthly — And lack of freshness.  However:

” … He  has given human beings an awareness of eternity; but in such a way that they can’t fully comprehend, from beginning to end, the things God does.  I know that there is nothing better for them to do than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live.

Still, the fact that everyone can eat and drink and enjoy the good that results from all his work, is a gift of God.

I know that whatever God does will last forever; there is nothing to add or subtract from it; and God has done it so that people will fear him.” Ecclesiastes 3:14 Complete Jewish Bible

In summary,

  1. We must follow the awareness of eternity though we cannot put our arms around it fully.
  2. We must find our enjoyment of life In the “gift” of God.
  3. God’s “forever” implies the stability of an immovable force. This unchanging, impenetrable immovable eternity Is where my security lies; also my cure for depression.

In closing, Solomon lived lavishly, he did not live a life of depression. But thankfully,

He discovered the futility of it all for us. The wisdom of his gray hair Is for us to feast upon.

Frankly, most of us will learn the hard way.

”  … Whenever God comes, the inspiration is to do the most natural simple things — the things we would never have imagined God was in, and as we do them we find He is there . Inspiration which comes to us in this way is an initiative against depression;  We have to do the next thing and to do it in the inspiration of God.” Oswald Chambers

Friends, we use this world but must not abuse it, We are in this world but not of this world.  Not earthy, sensual, or devilish, our wisdom is from above. — pure, peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. James 3:17-18

“Come out from among them, and touch not the unclean thing — He will be a Father unto us.”  Love ya
