The great need of the hour is for the believer to be internally built up and fortified. Nehemiah wept because the wall was broken down around the city of God and God’s people. When each believer is built up, it is not just for his sake, but for the Body of Christ’s sake (2). He is made a spiritual temple – part of the larger structure, the Body of Christ. “Ye also, as lively stones [living building blocks], are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (I Peter 2:5).
The building blocks (invisible capacities in the soul of the healthy believer) are necessary, but it is the mortar that makes the structure cohesive as a unit. The mortar must be the divine agapao love of God that holds the structure together. This is what the Word of God means in Ephesians 4:16, “From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.”
Let us love one another (3) because of a right mental focus and adjustment on the Finished Work of Christ in and between local assemblies. This is mortar that cannot and will not crack.
